About Oasis Church

OASIS is a well established Christian church meeting in Gowerton, on the Gower Peninsula, in Swansea,Wales. Our main meeting is on Saturday mornings in the function suite at the Conservative Club in the centre of the village. We also have a number of small group meetings throughout the week.

Our Vision

God's glory is displayed all over the earth, creation declares it, people illustrate it. However, God chooses to exhibit His glory with the most flavour and potency in His Church. Our vision therefore is to build a local church in Gowerton, a church in which God's glory can be enjoyed by those within and can be seen by others.

Our model is in Acts 2, where the church is founded by focusing on the health of three relationships:

1- Relationship with Jesus

2- Relationship with Christians

3- Relationship with non-Christians

By focusing on these three relationships we hope to build a local church in Gowerton. The timescale for this is in God's hands! But once this church is showing real signs of life, we hope to plant again.

Every neighbourhood should have a healthy local church and with God's blessing we can develop our vision from Gowerton to other areas too.

What we believe

What We Believe

We are a group of Christians who are conservative in our approach to The Bible, but culturally freethinking. This means we believe that there are certain key Biblical truths and we intend to stick to them. We also intend to remain true to our culture.

Of course, where culture stands at odds with Biblical truths we'll go with the Bible! But we intend to avoid non-Biblical 'traditions' and 'conventions' that remove church from real life, deny people the freedom and pleasure of the Gospel and cause so much alienation.

However, Oasis church is not a 'concept church' or a 'parachurch-group'. We meet at the Conservative Club because it is the best quality venue available in Gowerton. We aren't making a self conscious point about meeting 'upstairs in a pub'; to be honest our room looks more like a wedding venue than a pub. Also, we meet on a Saturday because of practicality; again, this is not a 'concept' issue.

If you are a Christian and you are concerned about these issues email us to chat! We'd be happy to answer any queries. The bottom line is that although we are a new group, meeting in an unconventional venue, led by a young leadership, we seek to follow the Bible first and hold conservatively to it.

Basis of our Faith

Here is the basis of our faith, the foundation of of what we believe and our character as a Church.

Bible

The Bible is Gods word, written down. There are no other books like it - it is reliable and it is relevant.

It should be read carefully and regularly- definitely by Christians, ideally by everyone!

Each book (the Bible is a collection of 66 short books) should be taken in its context and taught carefully to all. Why? It is a guide, how to live as a Christian and it will reveal Gods purposes for you.

It is complete- it should not be added to or taken from.

Trinity

There is one God. God has always existed and always will. He is all powerful, all knowing. He is immeasurable, uncontainable. He is perfect: blameless, true and loving.

God consists of three persons: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, co-existent, co-equal, co-eternal. One God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - This is known as the Trinity.

God the Father

God the Father created everything, he spoke and it appeared; he keeps this world alive. This is amazing, God is supernatural. His standards are beyond our ability, his love is beyond our ability. He is just, but he is also forgiving.

He is interested in all of us, he is big enough to care about the smallest thing that affects our lives.

Jesus

Jesus is Gods son - God didnt create him, he is naturally the son of God. Jesus was with God long before he came to earth. At creation, Jesus was there and worked with God in making everything. When above it says God still keeps everything alive, he does this through Jesus. Jesus, like the Father is everlasting.

He came into the world at 00AD to die as a sacrifice for our sins (wrongdoings). In the three years before his death he taught widely about how we should live. He performed miracles and forgave people. When he died (on the cross), he was punished for all sins past and present.

He rose again three days later, performed more miracles and taught some more before ascending to heaven.

Now he lives with God, representing us to Him.

Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit as its title suggests is spirit- it is not confined to follow a physical form, again this is supernatural and amazing.

He is with us now, His purpose is to bring people to realise their wrongdoings and to turn to God. Once that takes place He lives in Christians and helps them understand the Bible correctly.

Man

God made man - male and female - in His own image, to have a relationship with Him. Tempted by Satan, man rebelled against God and the relationship was broken. Having broken the relationship, there was nothing man could do to repair it (only Gods forgiveness could do it!).

Away from God, man is driven by selfish desire and is encouraged by Satan to remain that way. This condition is opposed to Gods way. Without Gods offer of forgiveness through Jesus, there is no hope.

Gospel

The term Gospel means good news.

Jesus Christ is the gospel, he was born, he lived, he died, he rose again and ascended to God.

Our rebellion against God and rejection of Him could not go unpunished. So, Jesus died in our place, being punished for our sins past, present and future.

Jesus death displays His love and grace. Now he represents us to God. No-one else could do that for us all.

Man's response to the Gospel

When man receives the gospel message he must confess his sins and accept it as truth; this must be a genuine response.

A life touched by the gospel is a changed life. It is a life of faith clearly seen by its service to Gods Kingdom.

Man's reward through the Gospel

Through the gospel, man is declared innocent and is saved from Gods punishment (salvation).

Man is given eternal life in Gods presence. God accepts man as His son.

Man is no longer ruled by his tendency to sin, but is free to live Gods life-plan.

Transformation

The Holy Spirit causes man to realize the Gospel and after the initial response, the change-process begins; we change to be more like Jesus.

Sin is still with us, but loosens its grip as we learn to live more like Jesus through his teaching and the power of the Holy Spirit within us.

As we do, people will notice Gods glory within us and will praise Him for it.

Everyone who responds to the Gospel is urged to persevere in transformation. This is achieved through Bible study, prayer and worship.

Empowered by the Spirit

When man responds to the Gospel, the Holy Spirit comes to live within and empowers man to tell others and to serve.

After salvation, Christians are encouraged to pursue being further filled with the Spirit in order to witness the Gospel with more power in many ways.

Church

The Church = the people who genuinely follow Jesus Christ.

So as a collective term, the Church is every Christian in the World. So strictly speaking, there is one Church worldwide.

(In practice the various traditions, cultural and regional differences between people mean that the Church has become divided the church into different denominations and congregations. These differences may be just packaging (dress code / music style) but may be more crucial (Jesus role in the Gospel) but this should not be the case as there are certain areas of Biblical truth cannot be approached as pick n mix!)

God creates the Church, calling people to follow Him, there He guides and preserves them.

The Church exists to worship and glorify God, to work for Him on earth. This work is to spread the gospel and see people come into relationship with Him; through relationship with Him, society (and the World) will be changed.

When someone hears and responds to the Gospel, they should join other Christians in this mission; this is vital.

Jesus Return

The time will come when Jesus will physically return to earth. At this time the dead will rise and all will be judged. Satan, his hosts and those whove rejected Jesus will be separated from His presence forever; eternal punishment. All who have accepted Jesus will live with Him forever, serving, worshiping and enjoying His amazing presence.

Then the unfinished creation will be completed- all things declare Gods glory and He will renew all things.

Bible

We accept the Bible, including the 39 books of the Old Testament and the 27 books of the New Testament, as the written Word of God.

The Bible is the only essential and infallible record of God's self-disclosure. It leads us to salvation through faith in Jesus Christ. Being given by God the Scriptures are both fully and verbally inspired by God. Therefore, as originally given, the Bible is free of error in all it teaches. Each book is to be interpreted according to its context and purpose and in reverent obedience to the Lord who speaks through it in living power. All believers are exhorted to study the Scriptures and diligently apply them to their lives. The Scriptures are the authoritative and normative rule and guide of all Christian life, practice, and doctrine. They are totally sufficient and must not be added to, superseded, or changed by later tradition, extra-biblical revelation, or worldly wisdom. Every doctrinal formulation, whether of creed, confession, or theology must be put to the test of the full counsel of God in Holy Scripture.

Trinity

There is one God: infinite, eternal, almighty, and perfect in holiness, truth, and love. In the unity of the godhead there are three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, co-existent, co-equal, co-eternal. The Father is not the Son and the Son is not the Holy Spirit, yet each is truly Deity. One God - Father, Son and Holy Spirit - is the foundation of Christian faith and life.

God the Father

God the Father is the Creator of heaven and earth. By His word and for His glory, He freely and supernaturally created the world of nothing. Through the same Word He daily sustains all His creatures. He rules over all and is the only Sovereign. His plans and purposes cannot be thwarted. He is faithful to every promise, works all things together for good to those who love Him, and in His unfathomable grace gave His Son Jesus Christ for mankinds redemption. He made man for fellowship with Himself, and intended that all creation should live to the praise of His glory.

Jesus

Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, was the eternal Word made flesh, supernaturally conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary. He was perfect in nature, teaching and obedience. He is fully God and fully man. He was always with God and is God. Through Him all things came into being and were created. He was before all things and in Him all things hold together by the word of His power. He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation and in Him dwells the fullness of the godhead bodily. He is the only Saviour for the sins of the world having shed His blood and died a vicarious death on Calvarys cross. By His death in our place, He revealed the divine love and upheld divine justice, removing our guilt and reconciling us to God. Having redeemed us from sin, the third day He rose bodily from the grave, victorious over death and the powers of darkness and for a period of forty days appeared to over five hundred witnesses performing many convincing proofs of His resurrection. He ascended into heaven where, at Gods right hand, He intercedes for His people and rules as Lord over all. He is the Head of His body the Church and should be adored, loved, served, and obeyed by all.

Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, convicts the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. Through the proclamation of the gospel He persuades men to repent of their sins and confess Jesus as Lord. By the same Spirit a person is led to trust in divine mercy. The Holy Spirit unites believers to Jesus Christ in faith, brings about the new birth, and dwells within the regenerate. The Holy Spirit has come to glorify the Son who in turn came to glorify the Father. He will lead the Church into a right understanding and rich application of the truth of Gods Word. He is to be respected, honoured, and worshipped as God the Third Person of the Trinity.

Man

God made man - male and female - in His own image, as the crown of creation, that man might have fellowship with Him. Tempted by Satan, man rebelled against God. Being estranged from his Maker, yet responsible to Him, he became subject to divine wrath, inwardly depraved and apart from a special work of grace, utterly incapable of returning to God. This depravity is radical and pervasive. It extends to his mind, will and affections. Unregenerate man lives under the dominion of sin and Satan. He is at enmity with God, hostile toward God, and hateful of God. Fallen, sinful people, whatever their character or attainments, are lost and without hope apart from salvation in Christ.

Gospel

Jesus Christ is the gospel. The good news is revealed in His birth, life, death, resurrection and ascension. Christs crucifixion is the heart of the gospel, His resurrection is the power of the gospel and His ascension is the glory of the gospel. Christs death is a substitutionary and propitiatory sacrifice to God for our sins. It satisfies the demands of Gods holy justice and appeases His holy wrath. It also demonstrates His mysterious love and reveals His amazing grace. Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and man. There is no other name by which men must be saved. At the heart of all sound doctrine is the Cross of Jesus Christ and the infinite privilege that redeemed sinners have of glorifying God because of what He has accomplished. Therefore, we want all that takes place in our hearts, churches and ministries to proceed from and be related to the Cross.

Man's response to the Gospel

Mans response to the gospel is rooted and grounded in the free and unconditional election of God for His own pleasure and glory. It is also true that the message of the gospel is only effectual to those who genuinely repent of their sins and by Gods grace put saving faith in Christ. This gospel of grace is to be sincerely preached to all men in all nations. Biblical repentance is characterized by a changed life, and saving faith is evidenced by kingdom service or works. While neither repentance nor works save, unless a person is willing to deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow Christ, he cannot become His disciple.

Man's reward through the Gospel

Salvation, the free gift of God, is provided by grace alone, through faith alone, because of Christ alone, for the glory of God alone. Anyone turning from sin in repentance and looking to Christ and His substitutionary death receives the gift of eternal life and is declared righteous by God as a free gift. The righteousness of Christ is imputed to him. He is justified and fully accepted by God. Through Christs atonement for sin an individual is reconciled to God as Father and becomes His child. The believer is forgiven the debt of his sin and via the miracle of regeneration liberated from the law of sin and death into the freedom of Gods Spirit.

Transformation

The Holy Spirit is the active agent in our sanctification and seeks to produce His fruit in us as our minds are renewed and we are conformed to the image of Christ. Though indwelling sin remains a reality, as we are led by the Spirit, we grow in the knowledge of the Lord, freely keeping His commandments and endevouring to so live in the world that all people may see our good works and glorify our Father who is in heaven. All believers are exhorted to persevere in the faith knowing they will have to give an account to God for their every thought, word and deed. The spiritual disciplines, especially Bible study, prayer, worship and confession, are a vital means of grace in this regard. Nevertheless, the believers ultimate confidence to persevere is based in the sure promise of God to preserve His people until the end which is most certain.

Empowered by the Spirit

In addition to effecting regeneration and sanctification, the Holy Spirit also empowers believers for Christian witness and service. While all genuine believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit at conversion, the New Testament indicates the importance of an ongoing, empowering work of the Spirit subsequent to conversion as well. Being indwelt by the Spirit and being filled with the Spirit are theologically distinct experiences. The Holy Spirit desires to fill each believer continually with increased power for Christian life and witness, and imparts his supernatural gifts for the edification of the Body and for various works of ministry in the world. All the gifts of the Holy Spirit at work in the church of the first-century are available today, are vital for the mission of the church, and are to be earnestly desired and practiced.

Church

God by His Word and Spirit creates the Church, calling sinful men out of the whole human race into the fellowship of Christs Body. By the same Word and Spirit, He guides and preserves that new redeemed humanity. The Church is not a religious institution or denomination. Rather, the Church universal is made up of those who have become genuine followers of Jesus Christ and have personally appropriated the gospel. The Church exists to worship and glorify God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It also exists to serve Him by faithfully doing His will in the earth. This involves a commitment to see the gospel preached and churches planted in all the world for a testimony. The ultimate mission of the Church is the making of disciples through the preaching of the gospel. When God transforms human nature, this then becomes the chief means of societys transformation. Upon conversion, newly redeemed men and women are added to a local church in which they devote themselves to teaching, fellowship, the Lords Supper and prayer.All members of the Church universal are to be a vital and committed part of a local church. In this context they are called to walk out the New Covenant as the people of God and demonstrate the reality of the kingdom of God. The ascended Christ has given gift ministries to the church (including apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers) for the equipping of Christs body that it might mature and grow. Through the gift ministries all members of the Church are to be nurtured and equipped for the work of ministry. Women play a vital role in the life of the church but in keeping with Gods created design, they are not permitted "to teach or to have authority over a man" (1 Tim. 2:11). Leadership in the church is male. In the context of the local church, Gods people receive pastoral care and leadership and the opportunity to employ their God-given gifts in His service in relation to one another and to the world.

Marks of the Church

Water baptism is only intended for the individual who has received the saving benefits of Christs atoning work and become His disciple. Therefore, in obedience to Christs command and as a testimony to God, the Church, oneself and the world; a believer should be immersed in water in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Water baptism is a visual demonstration of a persons union with Christ in the likeness of His death and resurrection. It signifies that his former way of life has been put to death and vividly depicts a persons release from the mastery of sin.As with water baptism, the Lords Supper is to be observed only by those who have become genuine followers of Christ. This ordinance symbolizes the breaking of Christs body and the shedding of his blood on our behalf, and is to be observed repeatedly throughout the Christian life as a sign of continued participation in the atoning benefits of Christs death. As we partake of the Lords Supper with an attitude of faith and self-examination, we remember and proclaim the death of Christ, receive spiritual nourishment for our souls, and signify our unity with other members of Christs body.

Jesus Return

The Consummation of all things includes the visible, personal and glorious return of Jesus Christ, the resurrection of the dead and the translation of those alive in Christ, the judgment of the just and the unjust, and the fulfillment of Christs kingdom in the new heavens and the new earth. In the Consummation, Satan with his hosts and all those outside Christ are finally separated from the benevolent presence of God, enduring eternal punishment, but the righteous, in glorious bodies, shall live and reign with Him forever. Married to Christ as His Bride, the Church will be in the presence of God forever, serving Him and giving Him unending praise and glory. Then shall the eager expectation of creation be fulfilled and the whole earth shall proclaim the glory of God who makes all things new.

Our Meetings

There have been many highlight and important moments in the brief history of Oasis Church and no doubt there will be many more. The first highlight was our first meeting together which was in January 2008. We started with a core team of six people, one child (Bethany), one bump (Daisy) and one dog (Zeus) in Ben & Rachels living room, in Gowerton!

In March 2008, we moved to the Scout hut/hall, which is behind the library, where we had our first public meeting. We had a huge gathering of 11 people and 2 children!!! Although we were just starting out and did not have a clue what we were doing, the Lord was with us and we knew his presence. The first book of the bible we preached through at this time was Ruth, we saw that the Lord was in control of everything and that he is a God who redeems.

After spending 4 months in the scout hut/hall, we ventured to have a carvary lunch in the conservative club one Sunday and to our surprise realised that it had been done out and was now the best venue in the village. We then started having our meetings at the conservative club in August 2008 and 2 years on we are still there. At this time our services changed from a Sunday morning to a Saturday morning as the room was used for carvary lunch on Sundays. It took us a bit of time to change and adjust to this, but has been a great blessing for us as a Church.

During the last 3 years we have grown steadily, seeing many people come to faith. In the last 3 years we have had 19 baptisms, we have a membership of 35 and attendances of 40 plus adults and 15ish children. We have two Elders (Ben and Steve) and one Deacon (Wayne). From the one house group in January 2008, we have now 4 house groups in Gowerton Also other areas of the Church have progressed from Simon making us a new website, Ben forming our band, Rob developing the childrens work and Wayne organising our finances and events team.

Our Facilities

We are looking to acquire our own building to hold Oasis Church, but until we do we use the Conservative Club in Gowerton, Swansea

The Con Club (as its known locally)

is a fully equipped function suite / conference facility. We have been using it for several months and it perfect for our needs. The manager has been very accommodating and supportive and the location has presented many advantages.

Steves Bio

Elder Steve Dyer Teaching Pastor

Steve is a Gowerton boy through and through! He would describe himself as being passionate for Jesus, his wife Bec, Oasis church, his 6 year old dog Zeus and football. Steve was a Liverpool fan in the 80s but then got converted to Man U in the 90s and still loves them to bits today! Steve is one of the founding members of Oasis Church which started with six people in Ben and Rachel's living room in January 2008. Steve believes that everybody lives for pleasure, but nobody will ever be satisfied in life until they come to have a relationship with Jesus. Steve's life goal is to show as many people as possible how amazing Jesus is.

Elder Ben Lloyd

Ben is from Tycoch, Swansea. He became a Christian at a Youth Camp on the Gower in the early 1990s then battled through School and family life as a teenage Christian; Tricky stuff! He moved into Gowerton about 6 years ago with his wife Rachel. They now have three young children and have recently accepted the fact that they have to drive a people carrier.

Ben loves God, Rachel, their children, family and the people of the Church loads. When he isn't spending time with all of those guys he loves playing and listening to music; Ben leads the Worship Team at Oasis. Apart from all that he is over-enthusiastic about very strong coffee, and is a largely abstinent golfer, cyclist, badminton and table tennis player.

Childrens Leader Rob Smith

Robert is a Gowerton boy born and bred. Up until 2006 he was indifferent to say the least on the existence of God. Then after a couple of unprecedented Bible studies with his best mate Steve (Dyer) and one miraculous prayer from his now wife, he committed his life to the LORD .

He is now married to Katie and has a daughter. Rob is one of the co-founders of Oasis and currently leads the Childrens Work at the Church. Rob likes the Swans, reading, the garden, football etc. He tends to spread himself to thinly thus never mastering any of his hobbies.

waynes bio real

Deacon Wayne Wilcox Church Administrator

Wayne aka Gunner lives in Gowerton with his wife Sarra and their daughter. He joined Oasis Church in April 09 and became a Christian in September of the same year. His passion after Jesus is football (dont tell his wife). Being the wrong side of thirty you would think it was time for him to retire, but we think he wll keep on going until his knees give in. He runs the admin side of things at Oasis and is always looking to delegate tasks to members, so dont make eye contact with him ever!
